Web vs. Mobile Design and Marketing
This is a topic that has many questions and a lot a factors that have come into play the last couple of years that have impacted this topic.
Web Vs. Mobile Sites
Each one of these sites is the front door to any entity’s marketing platforms. But you must understand that each one may serve the same purpose they are completely different. How are they different? Here is the answer. Depending on how these sites were designed is how they will respond on each different device, meaning how will they look and work on different devices such as desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones.
Okay I am going to be technical for just a second so bare with me and I will try not to throw a lot of tech jargon at you.
When the layout and design of these sites are being created there are several things that go in to play. Such as Meta data, Indexing, Coding which could be HTML, CSS etc. as well as setting up a responsive layout (Like I explained before think of this as DNA of a human being).
There are several different ways to do this, it depends on what program that is used to design or write these sites. Some designers put in something called breaking points that tell the site how the content is to look on different screens. This means that one site is present for that entity and it has responsive layout for the different devices. This was a simple solution until now. Well adding breaking points and designing any site is time consuming and difficult, trust me I know. Some sites are you may have already seen have not put in these breaking points and when viewed on a mobile device they are bulky, this is another big no-no, keep reading.
The playing fields for these sites have changed drastically in the last 2 years and I will explain why.
The New Playfield
First, mobile device usage has now surpassed any other form of device usage. Everyone is using their mobile devices to research, shop, buy, banking and whatever else they need to do on the internet.
Second, Google is actively penalizing entities in their search engine results that do not have a mobile site. Wait a minute; you say I have a mobile site already. No you may think you, do but 9 times out of 10 you have a web site that is designed to be viewed on mobile devices. Sorry that is not the same thing. But worse of all you do not want to be penalized by Google! You always want to make Google happy! And you want to be found on page 1 of those search engine results! Third, the latest polls are in. No one wants to read lines and lines of text. They are looking for bullet points, graphics and to the point information. If your mobile site is not designed right with the desired content then you will be simply passed over or they will click that little back button. You want your mobile site to be bold, responsive and to the point.
Just the Facts: Here are the bullets points of the information, just in case you are like me and just want the facts.
- Web and Mobile sites are two different sites from content, layout, coding, and design. if you don’t have this then you need to get it ASAP.
- Make sure that your web site is responsive to different mobile devices, make sure that the site you have now is a mobile site and not just a responsive web site.
- Google is actively penalizing within their search results if they do not have a mobile site. You want to make Google happy! You want to be found in page 1 of their search results. This is very important.
- Mobile sites content should be different than the web site content. Web site content can be more detailed where as mobile sites should be more bold, have more graphics, more responsive layout, and to the point attitude.
- With Mobile users dominating the field right now it is a must that there is a mobile site in place. It is also important that it is geared to the user’s experience.
